In celebration of their enduring legacy and ahead of their 50th anniversary in 2018, Led Zeppelin delighted fans with a special Record Store Day release and the announcement of their first-ever official illustrated book.
On Record Store Day 2018, April 21st, a limited edition 7-inch single was released, featuring two previously unheard mixes meticulously overseen by guitarist and producer Jimmy Page. The single, pressed on vibrant yellow vinyl, included the “Sunset Sound Mix” of “Rock and Roll” from *Led Zeppelin IV*, offering a fresh perspective on the classic track. The flip side boasted the “Olympic Studios Mix” of “Friends” from *Led Zeppelin III*, a stripped-down version without the orchestration found on the final album mix, providing a raw, “fly-on-the-wall” insight into the band’s recording sessions. This release marked Led Zeppelin’s first-ever Record Store Day exclusive and quickly became a coveted item for collectors.
Complementing this musical rarity, the band also unveiled plans for “Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin,” an official illustrated book. This definitive volume, created in collaboration with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones, was set to celebrate five decades since their formation. The book was promised to be a treasure trove for fans, featuring hundreds of previously unseen photographs, artwork from the band’s archives, and contributions from photographers worldwide, chronicling their unparalleled musical career both on and off stage. The book was ultimately released in October 2018.
