Stevie Nicks, the iconic vocalist of Fleetwood Mac, has once again opened up about her famously tumultuous relationship with bandmate and former romantic partner, Lindsey Buckingham. In a candid new interview, Nicks stated that she “dealt with Lindsey for as long as I could,” shedding further light on the complex dynamic that defined much of Fleetwood Mac’s career.
The enduring fascination with Nicks and Buckingham’s relationship stems from their intertwined personal and professional lives, which famously fueled the creation of the band’s magnum opus, “Rumours.” Their breakup in 1976, while recording the album, gave rise to some of their most poignant and powerful songs, including Nicks’ “Dreams” and Buckingham’s “Go Your Own Way.”
Nicks revealed that her last significant conversation with Buckingham was a brief three-minute exchange at a celebration of life for their late bandmate, Christine McVie, who passed away in 2022. “You could not say that I did not give him more than 300 million chances,” Nicks asserted, indicating the extensive history of attempts to navigate their difficult working relationship.
The definitive breaking point, according to Nicks, occurred during a 2018 MusiCares benefit concert where she observed Buckingham’s behavior. “He wasn’t very nice to anybody; he wasn’t very nice to Harry Styles,” she recalled. This incident, combined with what she described as her parents’ pragmatic advice in her mind, led her to the realization that she was “done.”
Despite the lingering tensions and the ultimate decision to move forward without Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac, Nicks expressed a degree of peace and even well wishes for her former partner. “I hope he lives a long life and continues to go into a studio and work with other people,” she said. “He’s also an icon, and he can teach people. He’s not stopped in his tracks. He can still make music and have fun.”
Nicks also firmly stated that Fleetwood Mac, as it was known, effectively ended with Christine McVie’s passing. “When Christine died, Fleetwood Mac died. We cannot replace her,” she affirmed, putting an end to speculation about future reunions of the legendary band.
