The football world has been plunged into mourning following the tragic news of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota’s death. The 28-year-old Portuguese international, along with his brother Andre Felipe (26), died early Thursday morning,July 3, 2025, in a devastating traffic accident in Zamora, Spain.
According to reports from the Spanish Civil Guard, the incident occurred on the A52 highway near the municipality of Cernadilla. Investigations suggest that the Lamborghini they were traveling in may have suffered a tire burst while attempting to overtake another vehicle, causing the car to veer off the road. The vehicle subsequently caught fire, leading to the immediate fatalities of both brothers. Emergency services, including the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Department and medical units, responded to the scene, but were unable to save them.
The shocking news comes just two weeks after Jota married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22. Jota and Cardoso had been together since 2012 and had three children.
Tributes have poured in from across the football community. Luís Montenegro, Portugal’s Prime Minister, expressed his deepest condolences, stating it was “an unexpected and tragic” loss for Portugal and the world of sports. Pedro Proença, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), described Jota as “much more than a fantastic player” but “an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.” The FPF has already requested UEFA to observe a minute’s silence before Portugal’s upcoming match against Spain in the Women’s European Championship.
Diogo Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a reported €44.7 million. During his time at Anfield, he made 182 appearances, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists, contributing significantly to the club’s successes, including a Premier League title. His sudden passing represents an immense loss for his family, friends, Liverpool FC, and the entire football fraternity.
